Phil Moreira

So, what is it like to be a Milton resident? It seems like many younger couples are moving out to the area to take advantage of the affordability and accessibility to the downtown core. Though these aren’t the only reasons why many have decided to call Milton home.

Discover Milton had the chance to speak with Phil Moreira, a resident living in the Hawthorne Village area for over 1.5 years.  Phil, who works downtown Toronto, moved to Milton because it offers a more affordable housing option, but also for the vibe of the young and expanding community.  Not to mention how close it is to family and friends.

What’s the best part of living here?

The sense of community everyone has here is remarkable. I know many of the people on my street and we’ll frequently join each other in our driveways, offer each other beers and chat it up. I’ll walk through my neighborhood while walking my dog and everyone says hi. It’s such a friendly environment which makes me feel safe and comfortable.

What’s the worst part of living here? (Daily commute, taxes, public transit, etc.)

It’s funny – I mentioned earlier how Milton being close to Toronto is what brought me here. I have many friends who work and live in Toronto’s downtown core and quite often, it’s the central location for everyone to get together. But it’s still at least a 30 minute drive into the city or an hour GO bus/train ride. For socializing, I wish Milton was closer!

In choosing a city, neighbourhood, and community to live in, what were your other choices, other than Milton? (Mississauga, Toronto, …)

My girlfriend and I looked at Mississauga & Brampton. Our parents live in both cities and it’s always nice to be close to them. Brampton had a nice property we were looking at – but the deciding factor was the community in Milton.

Are you a member of or belong to any local groups, clubs, associates, or sports teams? (If any, please explain what you do and how long you have been doing it)

Nope – I’ve wanted to join a soccer club, but I just don’t have the time! Maybe I’ll take up refereeing or something. hehe

Milton and the Region of Halton offers great outdoor activities like bike paths, hiking trails, farm tours, book clubs, mom groups, etc.  Have you been or taken part of anything local?

Yes!! I’ve hiked some trails at Rattlesnake Point, Crawford Lake, Mount Nemo.

How has being a member of Discover Milton helped you save on daily deals/perks? (If any, please explain the deal/perk you have taken advantage of and how much you saved)

I most recently became a member – so I haven’t taken advantage of anything yet, but I look forward to!

Can you provide any advice or suggestions to somebody who may be looking to move to Milton or the surrounding area?

Do it! Get to know the area you’re looking at. Ask residents for their recommendations – everyone is friendly, really! Then just sit back and relax!
