Posted by Jennifer from Milton Ontario

I wanted you all to be the first to know that I am holding an on-line cake / baked goods silent auction

All proceeds will be going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (by way of the CIBC Run for the Cure), a charity near and dear to to my heart.

As they say, “necessity is the mother of invention” and after 10 cake decorating classes (quite regularly involving actual cake) I had to find a better way to make use of my (fabulously delicious) creations or I will be the size of a house. And so the cake auction was born! Of course, wanting to capitalize on the exposure, I’m adding a few additional things to help increase the funds raised.

The good stuff:

The Main Event

CURRENT TOP BIDS – $20.00; $12.08; $12.00; $10.00

3) 1/2 dozen fabulously delicious dessert bars (graham crumbs, coconut, milk chocolate, white chocolate, scor bits, pecans – totally worth blowing your diet for!) … 4 lots … top 4 bids get them. Starting bid $5.00
CURRENT TOP BIDS – $50.00; $20.00

4) NEW ITEM! Updated! Generously donated by Matt at The Training Edge in Milton, 1 FREE weeks at his bootcamp. Starting bid $30.00 (retail value $75.00) www.trainingedge.ca

CURRENT TOP BID -

How fabulous is that?!? Now you can buy a delicious treat and then work it off. Totally a win/win!! Thanks Matt!!

Please e-mail bids to bakeforthecure@hotmail.com, making note of the item being bid on in the subject line. I will update top bids here every couple of days. If bidding is overwhelming, I may add additional lots as necessary.

Bidding will commence immediately, closing on August 27th at midnight. Unfortunately photos of the actually items will not be available to view until the 27th (or possibly the 26th) as they will be made fresh, but I will post examples of my work so far in a bit (examples added below).

George Qua-Enoo

August 13th, 2010 by admin

From time to time Discover Milton finds some great talent in this community, we then ask if we can showcase that individual’s talent  to our members and visitors.

We were happy to discover George Qua-Enoo, this months featured Milton talent. His friends call him GQ, and since you will be connecting with him below by getting a glimpse of his work and things he has to say about Milton, you can also call him GQ , we don’t think he will mind, he’s cool like that !

The latest development for this talented, up and coming Photographer is  that he’s  been recognized as one of the top emerging Photographers in Canada by Photo Life Magazine, which is a major Canadian photography publication. They also used one of his images(afro with a comb) of on their online current page here:  http://photolife.com/currentIssue.php

GQ was born and raised in Ghana, West Africa. His family immigrated to South Africa in his mid teens, not long before South Africa gained independence from apartheid in 1994.

His story of how he got into photography differs from most; neither one of his parents nor his grandparents handed him a camera when he was little. GQ didn’t grow up looking through fashion magazines or photography books compiled by some famous photographer.  He never studied photography formally either; everything he knew was self-taught.

Q & A with GQ:

Discover Milton: What made you want to move and live here in Milton & how long have you been a resident in Milton?

George Qua-Enoo: My wife and I bought our home here in Milton two years ago, after living on a farm in Halton Hills for two years prior.  We like the small town feel of Milton.  Everything seems to be within five minutes drive.

DM: What is one thing that you would love to see in Milton that is not here?

GQ: I would love to see more variety in cuisine and arts and entertainment venues.

DM: How would you describe your photography style?

GQ: Authentic

DM: What advise can you give to other photographers trying to break into the Industry?

GQ: Differentiate yourself from the pack and master your craft. What would make someone come to you for their pictures and not elsewhere?  Take as many photographs as you can. Practice the ABS Theory (Always Be Shooting).  Challenge yourself and try new things. Learn from other photographers and develop your own aesthetic. Photography is a continual learning art. Just when you think you know it all you then you realize you are not even half there. Create your own style and you won’t blend in like everyone else.

DM: One thing that the general public does not know about you?

GQ: My interest in photography initially started through modeling.  I quickly realized I prefer to be on the other side of the lens!

DM: What do you rate the Town of Milton so far from your experience from a scale 1 to 10? And why?

GQ: 9 out of 10.

It has so much to offer, it’s growing and that’s exciting and hopefully the infrastructure like roads, hospitals and schools can keep up.

Thanks GQ for answering our questions, your work is very unique, we wish you nothing but success for the future!  Always Dream and Believe! Don’t forget us when you make it as one the top photographers in the world :)

Headwinds to face future Milton Town Budgets

This Monday was the Budget Standing Committee’s 2011 Pre-Budget Public Consultation & Priority Discussion meeting.   Where both council members and the public are able to give input prior to staff preparing budget guidelines and estimates.

Attendance was sparse with many empty seats in the audience and a couple council members absent.   Being an election year, although the current council sets the guidelines and priorities it will be the new council which will ultimately vote and approve the 2011 budget.

We have a good financial base with advantageous revenue streams that some municipalities might envy.    But we have unique factors that will converge into financial headwinds that the next council will be faced with.

The upper governments stimulus package has helped Milton move ahead on several large  projects simultaneously.   But we are now faced with an impact to our operating budget once these facilities come online.   The Milton Centre for the Arts, our new  Library and the Milton Sports Centre Expansion will all be opening during the next council’s term of office.   The fruitful bounty of  money that let us move forward earlier than we normally would have will now adversely put pressure on our local tax-base to  operate these facilities.   User fees, naming rights and other revenue that might be generated by these facilities will only go so far.

Then there is the 800 lb gorilla in the room – Milton District Hospital.   Our hospital is not up to task to service Milton’s future population growth.   The expansion of the Milton Hospital is under analysis by town staff in consultation with Halton Health Care with a funding report expected on Monday June 28th.   But even if the stars align and optimism prevails there will be a large local portion that the Town of Milton will have to pony up the cash for.  Special tax levies,  taking on debt and increased property taxes all unappetizing options that might be heavily used unless we  address this proactively.

Then throw into the mix the other  “minor” (only in comparison) factors of…

* HST impact (Staff advise it’s likely a $200,000 cost to the town even though the province initially advised it would be ‘revenue neutral’ to municipalities)

* Town Staff are being challenged with managing the largest capital program expansions in our history with possible serious consequences to upper government funding streams if critical deadlines aren’t met.

* The continued rapid growth of our population and with it infrastructure to meet that growth.

So with this in mind the question that popped into my head this Monday night is where the heck is everybody?   There are 17 new candidates (not including incumbents) but less than half  actually showed up.

I didn’t have a prepared speech that night.   I wanted to listen to the presentation, hear some of councils possible budget priorities and see what members of the public might have to say.   But near the end when the committee chair started to go through the first and then second call looking for anyone out there who might want to speak,  I did get up and approach the podium.   I asked (through the Committee Chair) if it was possible in 2011 the subject of better access to budget and financial information by the public might be revisited.  Milton’s budget and financials are currently only available via static PDF while individuals who might want to do detailed analysis are going to want some excel spreadsheet, comma delimited CSV files or other industry standard format that they could then load onto their computer and access.   Most modern accounting systems will import and export financial data in a wide range of formats so it’s incredulous to believe this can’t be easily done.    The answer I got was a definite “maybe” and that “end user specifications” need to be further analyzed.
